THE THREAD OF LIFE
PENDLETON ® Legendary Wool Blanket

The timeless beauty of Navajo weaving has been treasured by Native
Americans, collectors and art connoisseurs for centuries..
PENDLETON'S ®, the "THREAD OF LIFE" blanket is a tribute to these
talented weavers and their legacy of extraordinary art. Like Navajo legends and love of beauty, these superb weaving skills are passed from generation to generation and flourish today.

The Navajo have always called themselves "Dine" or "the People".
They believed spiritual guides, called the Holy People, led them to the Southwest.
One of them, Spider Man, taught the People to make a loom from sunshine,
lightning and rain. Spider Woman taught them to weave.
So, by the time Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, the Navajo were already
accomplished weavers, using domestic cotton and native grasses.
The Spanish
brought with them their churro sheep and thus the the birth
of wool weaving among the Navajo.

These early weavers used natural dyes. Later, trade with Spanish and other Europeans brought access to "bayeta", a bright red, flannel-type wool from Europe.
Patterns incorporated traditional Native American design as well as
Spanish and other European motifs discovered through trade.
Designs often came from baskets and pots as well as the mesas and mountains that surround the Navajo lands.

The Thread of Life blanket, made by
PENDLETON®, is representative of the
Classic Period in Navajo weaving from 1804-1880.
The Chief's Blanket, a striped pattern favored, especially, by Plains Indian Chiefs,
emerged during this time.
The blankets were admired for their beauty, worn for warmth, and given as gifts to important people as a signal of wealth and social standing.
Alternating stripes with diamonds, triangles or zigzag lines and wavy bands such as those seen in
PENDLETON'S ® Thread of Life Blanket were common.
Narrow bands alternate with wider ones creating horizontal movement.
Larger bands on either end serve as a frame for the work.

PENDLETON'S ®, THE THREAD OF LIFE, Legendary Blanket has an ultrasuede patch with the story behind this design.
