® Legendary Wool Blanket
They SANG FOR HORSES PENDLETON
® Legendary Wool Blanket The Navajo Nation came
originally from Northwest Canada and settled into the American Southwest
in 1300 AD. Although they initially adopted many cultural practices from
the Pueblo such as masked dances, weaving, basketry and poetry, the Navajo
perfected the craft of silversmithing from the Spaniards. Navajo
19th century chief's blankets evolved into the renown rugs of today using
traditional Navajo colors of grey, red, black and yellow with accents of
turquoise. The Navajo regard their legends as having great powers:
the healing of the sick; initiating aspirations of spiritual experiences
and the uniting of people with Mother Earth. Animal spirits play an integral
part of their lives. "They Sang for Horses" is PENDLETON'S
® Legendary Blanket that portrays the story of the Navajo
Holy Person (Johano-aii) who rides a sacred horse proudly across the sky
each day from East to West, creating the Navajo image of greatness.
Johano-aii carries with him his shinning gold disk, the Sun. After darkness
of the night before, Johano-aii chooses one of his five blessed horses for his
daily travel depending on how the weather of the day begins. If the
day commences with the Morning Star and is fair, Johano-aii would choose the horse
of Turquoise or Shell in color. For the best of days travel he chooses the White
Horse. However, in the days of darkness or thunder Johano-aii would favor the
Red or Coal colored horse. Johano-aii's horses are fed flower blossoms
during the journey, quenched with Holy Waters found in the Four corners of the
world from snow, hail, rain and spring water. Beneath the horses' hoofs are "pitisstchi"
or golden flower pollen. This is known as the Mist on the Horizon or Holy Pollen.
The Four Directions, Holy Water and Holy Pollen are all mediated
upon by the Navajo. "They Sang For Horses" is sung at nightfall by the Navajo
men for the blessing of their horses. The blanket design depicts the
Morning Star in Fair Weather at the top, The Four Corners and directions of the
World in a traditional Sun Dial, The Five Horses of significant color (pending
the beginning of each day to travel), horse Hooves for completed travel to
all Four Corners, the Holy Pollen under the Hooves and as the Mist on the
Horizon, and the Storm pattern at the bottom representing days of darkness or
bad weather. The black background on the blanket signifies the Nightfall
of the day before. Size 64 x 80 inches. Composition: 82% wool;
