A tribute to American Indian Elders and Storytellers.
Story tellers and Elders fill an important role in each tribe, pass-
ing on to the future generations the customs, beliefs and history of
their culture. Teaching through the interpretation of stories, they learned from their elders, who learned before them, and then adding their own experiences to the stories.
The stories are the foundation that keeps the family and tribe together.
Their content can range from stories of creation, religion and the healing of the sick . Included in these stories are general education topics that cover
song and dance, tribal regalia, the meaning of Mother Earth and the Indian
way.
A storyteller is one whose Spirit is indispensable to the tribe and could be
an Elder or Artist. They are Holy People, Historians and keepers of Mother
Earth and here People. Storytellers use language as their tool, using the belief of the story, wonder and delight as more essential than the understanding.
Storytelling today is alive and well and continues to be an important part of Native American culture. In many ways, today's teachers and educators are
Storytellers, passing to the next generation the customs, beliefs and the
history of our society.
